Rockingham County Senior Living Brings the Polls to Residents

BRENTWOOD (November 2, 2022) As Election Day approaches, Rockingham County Long-Term Care Services has helped ensure nursing home and assisted living residents had the opportunity to register to vote and submit their absentee ballots.

The Americans With Disabilities Act protects the right to vote for people living with disabilities, including Alzheimer’s and dementia. For most residents of assisted living communities and nursing homes, mail in ballots offer a convenient way to vote. It’s also common for family members and loved ones to escort older adults to the polls.

This year, Rockingham County Rehabilitation & Nursing Center and Assisted Living Community worked closely with the Town of Brentwood, NH to review options for residents to exercise their voting rights. Together, Rockingham County and town officials hosted an absentee voting day for residents prior to the November 8 election. This gave residents the experience of heading to the polls to vote, something many residents enjoyed prior to moving into the senior living community. Residents were able to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and cast their vote, all from the comfort of home. To make the experience complete, town officials provided privacy screens, decorations, and “I Voted” stickers for the residents.

The voter registration and absentee ballots were managed by the Town Clerk, Daphne Woss, and the Supervisor of the Checklist, Linda MacDonald. The Town Moderator, Richard Chamberlain, was also present. The Brentwood town officials ensured compliance with all state and federal voting guidelines.

“We are responsible for giving residents a seamless opportunity to fulfill their civic duty,” said Rockingham County Commissioner, Kate Coyle. “We are so grateful to the Town of Brentwood and the employees at Rockingham County for their collaboration.”

The 2022 midterm elections will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. For more information on voter accessibility, contact your local election office.
