As we age, our bodies and minds undergo various changes. One of the most challenging changes is the onset of dementia. Dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is a progressive disease that can be difficult for both the person with dementia and their loved ones.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 26,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in New Hampshire. Due to the increase in need, senior living providers have begun to place a stronger focus on memory care services for older adults. In a memory care setting it’s important to have specially trained professionals who can provide the best care and support for those with dementia.
Rockingham County Rehabilitation, Nursing Center, and Assisted Living Community is excited to introduce a virtual dementia tour training program for their staff. The program is designed to give caregivers a better understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia. The virtual reality experience simulates the effects of the disease on the senses, making it easier for caregivers to empathize with their residents.
What is a virtual dementia tour?
The virtual dementia tour is an educational program designed by Second Wind Dreams, an internationally known non-profit organization dedicated to changing the perception of aging.
During the training, staff members wear devices that simulate visual and auditory impairments, as well as loss of fine motor skills. They are then given tasks to complete that mimic what a person with dementia might experience in their daily life. This includes trying to find items in a cluttered room or attempting to navigate through a hallway with distorted vision.
Who teaches the virtual dementia tour?
A trained facilitator guides the participants through the tour.
Rockingham County’s Life Enrichment Manager, Ken Wing, is a trained virtual dementia tour facilitator. “I’m so excited to bring this piece of technology to our staff and families,” said Wing. “I hope this training offers valuable insights and support for our community members.”
In order to become a virtual dementia tour facilitator Wing had to undergo various trainings that focus on empathic person-centered care.
What are the benefits of the virtual dementia tour?
The virtual dementia tour training helps caregivers to better understand the challenges faced by those with dementia. It also allows them to develop more effective communication strategies and provides insights into how to create a more dementia-friendly environment. This training equips caregivers with the necessary tools to deliver the highest quality of care to their residents. Additionally, the virtual dementia tour has been proven to decrease psychoactive medication and acute hospitalization for behavioral incidents.
