Resident Activity Idea: Retail Therapy Day

At Rockingham County, we have a dedicated clothing closet for residents fondly named Macy’s. We receive donations of new and gently used clothing throughout the year, which we can pull from for residents who may need new clothing items but not the funds to purchase them. Once a year, we take all the items from Macy’s and transform our indoor Atrium space into a full-fledged shopping boutique for a resident shopping day. Residents get to browse, try on, and select items they love, and ‘check out’ at a register – all at no cost. This particular resident activity has become a beloved tradition residents look forward to each year.

The event is a large undertaking, which was made possible with volunteers from Liberty Mutual, who joined us as part of their Serve With Liberty program. Serve with Liberty is an annual event that encourages employees to assist with service projects in their communities. Over a three-week period starting in April, Liberty employees go out into the cities and towns where they work and life to make a difference. In collaboration with our resident activity department, they help assist residents with shopping, organizing displays, and make the day feel extra special. The team of volunteers from Liberty Mutual have been coming to our center for the past 7 years.

Macy’s Shopping Day took place on May 13 in conjunction with National Skilled Nursing Care Week.

Watching the staff and volunteers help residents select clothing items it really did feel like a day at mall shopping with your best friends. We can’t wait to see all the residents rocking their new spring wardrobes!

This resident activity is just one of the many ways Rockingham County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center creates opportunities for meaningful engagement. Learn more by visiting www.rockinghamcountyseniorliving.com.
