Every year, the Gerontological Society of America hosts Careers in Aging Month to raise awareness about the career opportunities available in the aging services field. As we live longer and healthier lives, the demand for professionals in aging-related fields has grown. From universities to senior living communities, the aging field offers many career paths for people of all backgrounds and education levels.
At Rockingham County Rehabilitation, Nursing Center, and Assisted Living Community, we’re proud to have a team of individuals who make a difference in the lives of our residents every day. Throughout this month, we’ve been shining a spotlight on the incredible work our staff does across different departments. We’ve shared their stories and showcased the rewarding careers available in senior care.
Social Work: Advocates for Our Residents
Since National Social Work Month also occurs in March, it was only fitting that we kicked off Careers in Aging Month by highlighting our social services team. These professionals act as resident advocates and ensure that every individual’s needs are being met. Whether that means assisting with care transitions, providing emotional support, or coordinating care, their role is to help residents and their families navigate all the complexities of the aging journey.
This generation of individuals offer a wealth of knowledge and insight I will carry with me. My entire life I have enjoyed caring for others. Being a Social Worker in the elderly community allows me to care for them in ways that matter; being a hand for them to hold, an ear to listen, and someone to rely on.
Nursing: Providing Expert and Compassionate Care
Our nursing staff plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality care to our residents. The nursing department, comprised of both LPNS and RNS, provides the clinical care residents need. However, a career in senior living nursing also means playing an important role in fostering a warm, home-like environment for residents. Our nurses’ expertise, kindness, and commitment to excellence are a cornerstone in residents’ overall well-being.
When I was ten years old, I visited my grandfather in a nursing home in northern Maine. He had suffered a stroke and was left lying in a bed in poor condition with poor nursing care and he never received any form of rehab. He passed away years later but in a less optimal way with no dignity at all. From that time on, I realized that I wanted to care for others in a much better way and I didn’t want to see families leaving the nursing home with sadness and worry like ours did.
Working in long-term care is a rewarding job when providing the best quality of care possible for the residents in the later years. It brings me happiness to be part of a team where we provide excellent care leading to the best quality of life possible for the residents. It is a pleasure to provide resident families with the reassurance and confidence that their loved ones are treated with the utmost respect, dignity, love and care that they deserve. It is rewarding to see the families visit with their loved ones as family members and not feel that they must be the caretaker.
I find personal fulfillment in helping others and working with the elderly population. It is a strong compassion which allows me to provide care and support to them and their families during their golden years. Providing a positive impact and ensuring they are well taken care of.
Administration: The Backbone of Our Community
Behind the scenes, our administration team makes sure that the building runs smoothly. From coordinating staffing and managing operations to overseeing finances and running reception desks, their work supports every aspect of our community. The administration team allows our frontline teams to focus on what they do best—caring for residents.
My career allows me to support our aging generation on a personal level. Seeing their smiles while caring for their needs and well-being is truly rewarding
I love that my role goes beyond traditional customer service. Supporting and helping residents and their families promotes the kind of close relationships that make every day meaningful
Life Enrichment: Creating Joy and Engagement
Our life enrichment team plans activities and programs that enhance the lives of our residents. These professionals help residents stay engaged, active, and connected every day. From leading a Zumba class to spending one on one time with residents, a career in life enrichment means creating opportunities for whole person wellness and making a meaningful impact.
There are many reasons I have enjoyed working for the Life Enrichment department. It has been my pleasure to have been able to meet so many wonderful residents and their families. I am dedicated to providing daily compassion, ensuring their comfort, and fostering a sense of love and belonging.
Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNAs): Hands-On Care with Heart
Our LNAs are at the forefront of resident care, providing essential daily assistance. Additionally, LNAs build close relationships with residents, offering them comfort and companionship on a daily basis. The dedication and kindness of our LNAs creates a nurturing environment that makes our community feel like home.
I know from experience how hard it is to let others take care of you. I do this work because I know that I can give people respect, patience, and a kind face when they need it most.
Environmental Services: Keeping Our Home Safe and Comfortable
A clean, safe, and welcoming environment is essential in senior care, and our environmental services team ensures just that. Whether they’re maintaining equipment, keeping resident rooms tidy, or ensuring infection control measures are in place, their work is essential to the well-being of everyone in our community.
Caring for the residents is number 1 – this is their home. I also work alongside an amazing team and have made great friends.
