Jean Jennings Recognized as Newmarket’s Oldest Resident
BRENTWOOD, NH – December 5, 2024 – Jean Jennings, a resident of Rockingham County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, has been awarded the prestigious Boston Post Cane Award by the Town of Newmarket, New Hampshire. The Boston Post Cane Award is a New England tradition dating back to 1909 that honors towns’ oldest residents.
Newmarket Town Officials Wendy Chase and Brian Ward presented Jean with the award while an audience of Jean’s family and Rockingham County employees looked on.
“We take pride in celebrating our residents’ unique stories,” said Public Relations and Community Outreach Manager, Jeseca Wendel. “Jean’s life is a testament to hard work, kindness, and the power of giving back to your local community.”
A Life of Service and Dedication
Born on January 25, 1927, in Exeter, NH, Jean spent her life dedicated to her family, her profession, and the Newmarket community.
After graduating from Newmarket High School in 1944, Jean pursued a nursing degree at St. John’s School of Nursing in Lowell, Massachusetts. Jean worked as a Registered Nurse for Exeter Hospital after completing her degree, eventually becoming the first head of the cardiology department. At the age of 50, she advanced her training at Boston’s Lahey Clinic in order to lead Exeter’s neurology department, where she worked until her retirement in 1989.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Jean’s has left a lasting impact on the Newmarket community. She served as a Girl Scout leader, a Meals on Wheels driver, a Rockingham Family Planning Clinic volunteer, a Seacoast Hospice volunteer, and a historian for the Newmarket Senior Citizens Group. Additionally, Jean was an active member of St. Mary’s Church and the Newmarket Women’s Club.
In her retirement, Jean picked up quilting and became a member of the Seabreeze Quilt Guild. Her work has been honored by the Newmarket Historical Society and displayed at the Stone School Museum.
Celebrating Jean’s Legacy
Jean, who will celebrate her 98th birthday on January 25, 2025, now resides at the Rockingham County nursing home, where she continues to enjoy craft projects and spending time with family and friends.
The Boston Post Cane Award is a fitting tribute to a woman who has given so much to her community.
