The program is designed to give caregivers a better understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia. The virtual reality experience simulates the effects of the disease on the senses, making it easier for caregivers to empathize with their residents.
What is a virtual dementia tour?
The virtual dementia tour is an educational program designed by Second Wind Dreams, an internationally known non-profit organization dedicated to changing the perception of aging.
During the training, staff members wear devices that simulate visual and auditory impairments, as well as loss of fine motor skills. They are then given tasks to complete that mimic what a person with dementia might experience in their daily life. This includes trying to find items in a cluttered room or attempting to navigate through a hallway with distorted vision.
Who teaches the virtual dementia tour?
A trained facilitator guides the participants through the tour.
Rockingham County’s Life Enrichment Manager, Ken Wing, is a trained virtual dementia tour facilitator. “I’m so excited to bring this piece of technology to our staff and families,” said Wing. “I hope this training offers valuable insights and support for our community members.”
In order to become a virtual dementia tour facilitator Wing had to undergo various trainings that focus on empathic person-centered care.
