National Assisted Living Week

From September 11-17 the Ernest P. Barka Assisted Living Community joins tens of thousands of communities across the country as we host events for National Assisted Living Week. The National Center for Assisted Living established the weeklong celebration in 1995. During this week, we recognize the residents, staff, and volunteers who work and live in assisted living communities (ALCs). This week also provides a unique opportunity to learn more about this sector of long-term care.

This year’s theme is “Joyful Moments.” This theme allows us to celebrate and create new, special memories together. “Joyful Moments” reflects the connection between residents and staff.

“Engaging with our residents is a rewarding experience that makes a difference in their lives,” said Jason Smith, Senior Director of Long-Term Care Services. “We are committed to creating an inclusive community where residents feel like they belong. This approach creates an environment where older adults live well and thrive.”

What is an assisted living community?

ALCs are residences for older adults that offer services that support continued independence for when activities of daily life become too challenging. Residing in an ALC allows older adults to take advantage of all life has to offer. There are approximately 28,900 ALCs in the United States.

Dr. Keren Brown Wilson, who owned and operated the first ALC, first introduced the concept in the 1970’s. Wilson’s model was the first to provide nursing care in a non-nursing setting, which revolutionized the long-term care industry.

Needing assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) is one of the most popular reasons older adults move into an ALC. Under the assisted living model, residents can enjoy remaining as independent as possible while receiving personalized assistance with daily tasks as needed. Residents who live in an ALC can enjoy life with security and comfort, knowing a team of caregivers is there to support them when it’s needed.

How you can celebrate:

  1. Take a Tour of an assisted living
  2. Visit a friend or loved one who lives in an ALC
  3. Send a thank you note to an assisted living employee or volunteer
  4. Share your own Joyful Moment and spread the word on social media by using the hashtag #JoyfulMoments
  5. Stay informed and take action on issues affecting long-term care
